‘She is an Architect” RIBA exhibition in Shanghai

Binke Lenhardt, co-founder and partner of Crossboundaries, was invited to participate the exhibition ‘She is an Architect’ hosted by RIBA Business Information Consulting (Shanghai) Company Limited – RIBA China Chapter (co-hosted by Meta Media and ZiWu), held at the Modern Studio in Shanghai in August 2022 and planned to travel to other cities in China within this year.

The works on display in the exhibition passed through a global calling with an almost 3 months lasting entry process and includes professional design projects, academic research and student works.

Represented are women of all ages working in the field of architecture at multiple locations, including the United Kingdom, Europe, China, the Gulf and South East Asia regions.

Spanning over more than 100 years, the exhibition also includes Ethel Mary Charles who became the first female architect joining RIBA, back in 1898.

The curatorial team sets a focus point on the female perspective, sharing projects and their stories, experiences and success and wants to achieve the goal of equality, diversity and inclusion in the global architecture profession.

The showcased project is the recently completed Songzhuang Micro Community Park

The basic concept of the design is the creation of “change of scenarios” that take place every hundred walking steps. The “rooms” or niches, a variety of relaxation zones protected by gray brick walls, vary in use and openness. The design responds both to the range of population structure and the resulting diversity of usage requirements and leisure interests, as well as to the need for community and exchange between generations and social groups.
